While there were a handful of cheap shots, bullshit moments, and frustrating encounters that occurred, they weren't enough to deter me from pushing through to the end. Had there been better alien-related boss fights with the same level of care put into them that nearly every other boss had, then I feel there would have been more worth noting about that 20-25 minute part of the game. There is a cool surprise moment in how the aliens abduct whatever character you're playing as in the moment to clone them later on which was definitely neat, but not enough to make the alien section of the game stand out. I wouldn't have minded so much had all of the alien levels not felt super underdeveloped compared to the rest of the game.

Most disappointingly however, this game pulls the exact same trick Metal Slug 2 pulled in that the main villains of the game are aliens. The alien mothership boss was also incredibly boring and disappointing after the rest of the bosses were so excellent. Bosses were pretty great for the most part though that crab thing as the beginning and the alien brain thing at the end took way too fucking long.

Also, as previously mentioned this soundtrack was by far the best out of all three games by a long shot. The levels also feature a branching pathway system, which introduces an aspect of replayability to those who might be interested. However, the two top-down shooting sections in space dragged on for what felt like forever. The levels, save with the exception of the zombie one, are not as memorable as Metal Slug 2's were while also not dragging on as long as Metal Slug 2's did. Metal Slug 3 continues this formula of constantly improving on preestablished formulas by keeping things moving at a constant pace while introducing enough variety to keep the gameplay fresh and varied. Metal Slug 1 was a decent but utterly unfair game and Metal Slug 2 was a much more fair and lively experience but suffered from abysmal slowdown that ruined a lot of the action in several instances. Boasting a kickass Mega Man X-like soundtrack with some of the most detailed and expressive sprite animation I've ever seen, this game oozes with personality. 1h 5m PlayedMy favorite Metal Slug game by far.
